Program Description

The German Language examination is designed to measure knowledge and ability equivalent to that of students who have completed two to three semesters of college German language study. For more information on the exam, please refer to the College Board Web site for the German Language exam.

Experience and Skills

The purpose of standard setting is to re-evaluate the recommended credit-granting scores for CLEP exams. In the standard setting study, a panel of experts exercise informed judgement to determine the level of performance on CLEP German Language exam that warrants college credit for the typical first- or second-semester German Language course. Per the training provided as part of the study, panelists will go over questions on the exam and make a judgment on how an average student in a comparable college course would perform on each question. (For a more in-depth explanation of the process, please refer to the Standard Setting portion of the College Board Web site). The panel of experts for each study consists of no less than 20 university and college faculty members. The study is scheduled for two and a half days. Participants in the standard setting study are required to participate in all the activities in those days. Panelists will receive an honorarium of $700.00 upon completion of the study.

The study is scheduled to begin in the afternoon of Friday, May 17, and end on Sunday, May 19. A copy of the standard setting agenda will be sent to panelists in advance. To be eligible to participate in the study, you must be currently teaching or have recently taught a college-level German Language course. Attached is a summary of technology and location requirements for participating in the video-based standard setting study.

If you are interested in participating in this study, please apply and include your most recent resume and teaching syllabus. If you are not available/interested to participate, feel free to share this with a colleague who may be interested and qualified.

Summary of Technology and Location Requirements

Panelists should each use

  • a newer (2016+) desktop or laptop computer running Google Chrome (the computer should be a Mac or PC; iPads and Chromebooks are unacceptable),
  • a webcam,
  • a headset with microphone (PC speakers/built-in microphones create echo and are therefore unacceptable), and
  • at least one monitor with a suggested screen size of 20-24 inches or larger (two monitors are recommended for easier viewing but not required).

The following suggested internet connection is to ensure a steady connection throughout the standard setting.

  • Panelists should have access to an internet connection with speeds of at least 8 Mbps down / 3 Mbps up.
  • If panelists are working from home (as opposed to working from an institution), they should have exclusive use of this bandwidth, meaning the internet connection is not being shared with family members or other people in or around the home.
  • Ideally, the connection should be hard-wired to the computer (not WiFi); personal hotspots are strongly discouraged.

Whether panelists are working from home or from an institution, it is imperative that they be in a private, indoor space from which they can participate without interruptions or distractions.  Panelists also need to participate in a space where content is not viewable by others in accordance with the Non-disclosure Agreement (NDA).

In addition to meeting the minimum hardware requirements, remote panelists should have intermediate knowledge of computers and networking technology such that they can toggle comfortably between multiple windows on their computer desktops and take an active role in troubleshooting connectivity or access issues should such issues arise.

Panelists must create their Zoom account using their institution email address and use the desktop Zoom client and not the web client. Lastly, panelists must keep their cameras on for the duration of the meeting each day.
